Physical Activity
Physical Activity Recommendations
Adults (age 19+)
- To be healthy - at least 30 minutes most days of the week
- To prevent weight gain – 60 minutes a day
- To maintain weight loss – 60-90 minutes a day
Children (ages 2-18)
- To be healthy – at least 60 minutes most days of the week
Health Education Programs
Williamson County & Cities Health District (WCCHD) offers nutrition programs for adults as well as children and families that discuss the importance of physical activity. All programs are offered in English and Spanish, are free to the public, and are provided at various locations throughout the County. Current programs are:

Walk Across Texas
Walk Across Texas is a program created by the Texas AgriLife Extension Service in 1996 to help individuals establish the habit of regular physical activity. This is an eight-week program for all ages and can be completed alone or with a team. Team members do not have to walk together and the choice of physical activity does not have to be walking. Some prefer to bike, swim, or even dance! From border to border, an individual or team can walk 830 miles across the state, seeing their progress on-line or on a Texas road map! America on the Move
America on the Move challenges people to take small steps and make small changes to a healthier way of life. This program is a community fitness initiative for all ages. It is geared for beginners, but open to all fitness levels. The goal is to provide a safe and friendly group walking activity each week where participants increase their daily steps from their own personal baseline – no matter what that is – by just 2,000. In addition, participants will receive tips on decreasing 100 calories each day from their regular eating habits. These two small changes add up to BIG results over time!
